Avoiding Foreclosure Scams

Unfortunately, foreclosure scams are becoming more and more usual. People facing foreclosure become desperate and want to believe that someone has an easy way out. This is almost never the case. However, there are people out there who will tell you that they can help you out of foreclosure.

Often, these scams begin with the scammer trying to gain the trust of the home owner. This often involves much of the following:

The scammer will contact you. This is something that foreclosure consultants will not do, and should be your first clue that the person is scamming you. The scammer will try to prey on your desperation, and will give you little to no information. Often, scammers will claim that they are affiliated with the government.

Scammers also use “affinity marketing” to people that they believe may be less educated on the foreclosure process. They may provide false testimonials, and tell you that the process will be quick and easy. Unfortunately this is never the case with foreclosure. On top of this, they will tell you to stop all contact with your mortgage lender.

Any of the above should let you know that the person you are dealing with is not legitimate. If you think that someone is trying to scam you, cease contact with that person.
