Credit Repair Clinics
Some people get themselves into problems with their creditors that seem hopeless. When this happens, it is not unusual for them to want someone to make everything better, and get their credit back in line. Unfortunately, this is not possible.
Credit repair clinics cannot legally do anything that you cannot do for yourself. They may claim to be able to fix everything for you, but it is easier and far cheaper for you to fix your credit yourself. Often, a credit repair clinic will charge you somewhere between $250 and $5,000 to perform services that you can do for yourself. If they do something that you cannot do for yourself, they are taking illegal action.
Some of these clinics will steal social security numbers from minors or the deceased to help you get a loan. They may also have you apply for an IRS Employer Identification Number to use instead of your social security number. Both of these tactics are very much illegal and can get you into a lot of trouble.
Using legal tactics to get you out of credit problems, credit repair clinics can only do what you can do. This includes removing incorrect information from your credit file and keeping it up to date. Other than general housekeeping on your credit file, all you can do is try to rebuild your credit. This is something that these companies cannot do for you in any way.
