Learning to Tighten the Belt
One of the biggest problems Americans are facing today is adjusting from a lifestyle of excessive consumption to one in which you can’t just go out and buy something whenever you want it, where loans are harder to come by, and we have to be careful of how much we spend. It’s a time of getting back to basics, of doing without, and stretching things out a bit. It may seem scary at first, but by making financially responsible decisions, you can greatly reduce the amount of money you spend each year.
Savings Add Up Quickly
By following these few easy steps, you can save yourself and your family a lot of money:
- Make big purchases last longer. One of the biggest ways to cut back on spending is to forgo buying an expensive new item. Automobiles, appliances, and electronics are all expensive items which depreciate over time; that is, their value declines the longer you own them. They are, in this sense, bad investments. If you take good care of these items, you will be able to use them longer without having to replace them.
- Compare prices before you buy. Whether it’s a car or a six-pack of soda, saving money is saving money. Even though it may seem like a couple of dollars isn’t much to save, added up over the course of a year, it can be a significant amount.
- Sell or donate items once you’re done with them. Instead of throwing out items you no longer use, you can sell them at a yard sale or donate them to charity. When you donate items to charity, you are able to write them off on your taxes, which can save you some money.
- You can save money on electricity by carefully turning off lights and appliances when you leave a room. Additionally, if you use fans instead of air conditioning when possible, you’ll save a good deal of money. In the winter, instead of turning on the heater, put on a sweater or jacket.
- If you have multiple children, you should consider handing down the clothing instead of buying new clothing for every child. If you buy quality clothes, they will last longer. This applies to you as well. Avoiding “fashionable” clothes and instead purchasing timeless items of clothing will mean you can wear them for years and years without being the last guy in acid-wash jeans and a Members Only jacket.
If you tighten the belt a little and adhere to these tips, you can slash the amount of money you essentially throw away each and every day.
