Creditor Harassment
If you find yourself in a situation where your debt overwhelms you, your creditors can go too far in reminding you. This is called creditor harassment. Harassment from creditors can take a number of forms that all cross a line. These can include, but are not limited to:
- Visiting you at home
- Violent threats
- Excessive calling or calling at odd hours
- Giving false information or false promises
- Threatening to embarrass you
All of these are completely unacceptable ways of trying to get you to repay your debts. However, they do happen, and for a number of reasons. Often, creditors harass people over credit card debt, auto loans, or even medical bills.
If you file for bankruptcy, the creditors must stop harassing you. However, some creditors are so persistent in their harassment that they force people into filing for bankruptcy. It is wrong for creditors to pressure you into anything, including filing for bankruptcy. If you are in this kind of situation, a bankruptcy attorney can help.
Creditors are paid to collect debts. This means that if they can get you to pay your debt, they get paid for it. While they are supposed to be professional, some of them do cross the line into harassment. When this happens, they are outside of their rights to remind you of your debt.
